Alternative Press Internship (unpaid)

The Dewitt Wallace Periodical Room at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building has an exciting opportunity for a student who wants to get hands-on experience working with the division’s alternative press collection. The collection is one of the most extensive in the country and contains many unique, hard-to-find journals.
Under the mentorship of the Helen Bernstein Librarian for Periodicals, the internship will provide the opportunity to assist in collection development and management of alternative press publications. This is a great opportunity for a student interested in working with alternative & small press publications, zines, little magazines and chapbooks which are part of a large serial collection in a research library environment.
This internship will run during the Spring 2016 Semester
Under The Direction And Supervision Of The Helen Bernstein Librarian For Periodicals, The Intern Will Have The Opportunity To

  • Inventory the zine collection and assist in processing and preservation of the collection.
  • Create a research guide to alternative press materials, including zines & little magazines, to make them more available to researchers.
  • Correspond with magazine publishers and distributors to identify new titles and gaps in the Library’s periodical holdings.
  • Work with Librarian and Exhibitions staff to help curate Periodical Room display case.
  • Assist with ongoing programming and social media, including two blog post.

 

  • Passion and commitment to alternative press publishing with a background in zines and graphic design. Interest all aspects of small press collection development in libraries. Strong social media skills with experience writing for blogs, Ability to work independently and detail oriented.
  • Students must be enrolled in an approved degree program at an accredited educational institution
