The Penguin Young Readers group is looking for a Design Assistant.This imprint publishes approximately 150 titles a year, creating every kind of children’s book for every kind of child. Focused on ages 0-12, they offer middle grade fiction, original paperback series, leveled readers, nonfiction, and licenses to captivate even the most reluctant of readers.In addition to best-selling chapter books, award-winning Readers, and the ever-popular Mad Libs, the group expands in-house brands including The Little Engine That Could, The World of Eric Carle, and Llama Llama, and continues the legacy of Beatrix Potter. They are leaders in the nonfiction market with their Who Was? program and work with top licensors on media tie-in publishing.
Specifically, The Design Assistant
- Provides administrative support to the senior art director including processing invoices, scanning art, archiving files, and scheduling meetings.
- Works closely with the senior art director to ensure efficient and productive staff workflow.
- Assists design staff with cover/interior design changes and artist searches.
- Designs 15-20 books of varying format a year.
- Traffics materials for catalog, the cover library, and all other internal requests.
- Corresponds with artists and artist representatives.
Minimum Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of Mac platform and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat)
- Proactive and able to provide timely follow-through on projects
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel
- Prior related internship preferred
- Interest in children’s television, film, and video games
