Two Student Opportunities: TheDream.US National Scholarship for Undocumented Students and TheDream.US Internship Funding Program for TheDream.US Scholars

From the Queens College Immigrant Student Support Initiative:

The Queens College Immigrant Student Support Initiative would like to inform you of two amazing opportunities for students: a scholarship opportunity for undocumented students and a new opportunity for TheDream.US Scholars to participate in a paid internship funded by TheDream.US.

TheDream.US National Scholarship

TheDream.US National Scholarship application is live! The scholarship provides up to $33,000 in financial assistance for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree! 

TheDream.US National Scholarship application is open to undocumented immigrant students with or without DACA or TPS who came to the United States before the age of 16 and before November 1, 2017. Additional eligibility criteria include:

  • Students must be or about to be high school graduates or GED recipients.
  • Students must have been or are currently enrolled in a college or university.
  • Students must exhibit significant unmet financial need.

TheDream.US Internship Funding Program 

Queens College Dream.US Scholars with a work permit or ITIN (DACA is not required) are eligible for this opportunity, allowing students to demonstrate their skills, explore career paths, and expand their professional network, all while getting paid! Students are eligible to receive payment in accordance with the number of hours they work at an estimated rate of $20 per hour. 

To participate in the program, scholars must meet the following criteria:

  • be a current Queens College Dream.US Scholar
  • be a currently enrolled Queens College student
  • have a valid social security number (SSN) or an individual tax identification number (ITIN)
  • have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher; and
  • possess an unpaid internship that meets the following criteria: is scheduled to last between 40 and 200 hours, has a dedicated supervisor, is related to your academic goals.

If students meet the criteria and have documentation that they have secured an unpaid internship (i.e. offer letter, email from internship supervisor, etc.) they may apply for funding by completing this application form on Parker Dewey.

Internship Opportunities at the Tech Incubator at Queens College

Here are two internship opportunities for you to consider:

  1. Participate in a testing project at a startup

An NYC-based start-up is building a social metaverse app that shows people what’s happening around them in real-time via a 3D digital twin of the real world. Its founder is interested in teaming-up with students to Beta-test the app, deliver feedback, insights and feature suggestions as Ubiq moves from Beta to full launch.

  1. Be a facilitator for Girls Who Code

We plan to offer the Girls Who Code Club again for students from grade 6 to 12. We are looking for college students who would like to serve as facilitators for the club sessions where the girls will learn how to code and complete projects. The club will be run virtually from Oct. 29 to Dec. 10, on Saturdays, from 10 to 11:30 am.

Diverse Streets Initiative is looking for an intern

OVERVIEW

The Diverse Streets Initiative is an informal grassroots organization that utilizes streets as temporary public solidarity spaces. With multiple mediums, including the arts and community organizing, we use streets to bridge different communities together on topics that impact all BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ and immigrant folks. From October to March, we will be focusing on culminating our “Resilience Series”.

THE CANDIDATE WILL:

  1. Assist the director and co-director (founder and co-founder) with social media development and content
  2. Assist the director and co-director with community outreach, including stakeholders (restaurants, small business owners, public institutions, community organizations etc.)
  3. Assist the director and co-director with designing and distributing a zine centered on public safety and health in the public realm
  4. Assist the director and co-director with poster event design

REQUIREMENTS:

●  Enrolled in a Bachelor’s program

●  Interest in multiple of the following: Art or Visual Arts, Graphic Design, Urban Planning, Urban Design, Urban History etc.

●  Proficiency in social media platforms such as a facebook and instagram

●  Can work in a fast paced environment

●  Availability to work 10 hours a week between October – March

●  Active and good listener

●  Creative designer

●  Can conduct community outreach

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

●  Familiar with the following software: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign;

●  Familiar with unfold, square grid, and other social media programs

●  Ability to multitask

●  Bilingual proficiency

●  Experience with community organizations

●  Experience with graphic design

●  Familiar with the Public Realm

●  Advocate of social justice and the arts

Where Are All the Black People is returning this fall with its first-ever hybrid diversity conference and career fair! The event kicks off online on October 6th and then we’ll meet up at Convene in Downtown NYC on October 7th for an action-packed day.

Freelance work for The Futures Initiative at CUNY Grad Center

The Futures Initiative advocates greater equity and innovation in higher education at every level of the university. Housed at the CUNY Graduate Center and reaching throughout the CUNY community, the Futures Initiative empowers the next generation of intellectual leaders with bold, public, and engaged teaching and learning.

CUNY Cultural Corps Application Deadline Extended to May 23

The deadline to apply for our 2022-23 cohort has been extended to May 23rd.

CUNY Cultural Corps works with a wide range of students. From art history majors looking to get a behind the scenes look at museum operations to accounting majors with a soft spot for the arts. We work with all majors, backgrounds, and skill levels.

What is CUNY Cultural Corps?

CUNY Cultural Corps is a career development program that places CUNY students in paid internships at cultural organizations throughout NYC. The program was started in collaboration with the NYC’s Department of Cultural Affairs as an effort to create more diversity and equity in NYC’s cultural sector.

After undergoing a matching process and receiving their placements, students work between 10-12 hours a week throughout the fall and spring semesters and are paid $15 an hour. In addition, students receive a series of career workshops meant to further their professional development in the field.

Partners from our 2021-22 cohort include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, HERE Arts Center and Flux Factory with positions ranging from Museum Interns to Finance Management Interns to Education Interns and more.

To be eligible to apply students must:

  • Currently enrolled at any CUNY college, working towards a degree (Community College, Senior College, or Graduate School)
  • Be registered for at least 12 credits (for undergraduate freshman, sophomores, and juniors) or 6 credits (if you are a rising senior or graduate student) while enrolled in the program
  • Graduate students are eligible for the program if they are enrolled in at least 1 course at a CUNY campus for both Fall & Spring.
  • Have a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 2.5
  • Have earned at least 24 college credits by the end of summer 2022 (12 college credits for community college students)
  • Have addressed any remedial education needs prior to beginning Fall 2022 classes
  • Have the proper work authorization required by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
