The application deadline for all paid internships for college and graduate students at the Main Building is January 9, 2014, at 4:00 p.m. (EST). Applications received after this deadline will not be considered.
Please carefully review the following descriptions of college internship departmental placements and projects before applying. On the online application, you will be asked to indicate up to two departments in which you would like to be placed.

Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas (Precolumbian Art)
The intern will work with a curator to conduct preliminary research for an exhibition project in ancient American (Precolumbian) art. Responsibilities will include image procurement and reference checking. Background in art history, anthropology, or archaeology required; Spanish language skills and familiarity with databases strongly preferred.
Asian Art (Chinese Art)
The intern will work with a curator to conduct research in preparation for an exhibition on early Chinese art. Responsibilities will include library and Internet research, compiling bibliographies, and assembling object lists and image files. Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat required. Knowledge of Chinese art and Chinese reading skills preferred.
Communications
The intern will assist the department in a variety of projects including the preparation and staffing of press events, updating press contact lists, archiving press materials, and researching new media outlets. The intern will learn how to produce digital press kits and will observe the techniques and strategies employed by the department to promote the Museum and its exhibitions, programs, and announcements. He or she will assist at press events and film and photo shoots. The intern will work with a number of staff in the department and attend regular departmental meetings.
Digital Media (Creative Development)
The intern will work primarily on CT-scanning data of an ancient Egyptian mummy. The goal will be to produce images for both research and a future digital media display using medical-imaging software. High proficiency in computer applications, strong attention to detail, and ability to learn new software required.
Digital Media (Social Media)
The intern will assist with the Museum’s social media program by creating content to share across Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and Foursquare. The intern will monitor social media channels for mentions, comments, and questions the Museum should respond to or engage with. The intern will assist in pulling and gathering data, statistics, and in-depth analysis for social media reporting. The intern will also work on social media campaigns for exhibitions, the permanent collection, and events. Ability to meet deadlines, close attention to detail, a knowledge and interest in social media and art history, and strong writing skills are required.
Direct Marketing
The intern will assist the Manager of Graphic Design with images on The Metropolitan Museum of Art Store website. Responsibilities include adding products to the website; scanning, silhouetting, and sizing images; online merchandising duties; and proofing imagery for the site. The intern will support senior managers within the department with the distribution of printed materials, image archiving, coordination with product managers of the pick-up/delivery of product samples, and other administrative duties. Professional demeanor, strong attention to detail, organizational skills, ability to work independently and in a team environment are required. Solid working proficiency in Photoshop CS5 is essential; this should include, but is not limited to, retouching of imperfections, color correcting, understanding of color management, the ability to work in adjustment layers/masks and paths, complex selections, and image optimization for the web. Experience in e-commerce preferred.
Editorial
The intern will learn about all aspects of art publishing, from the editing and proofreading process to the numerous pre-press steps leading to the manufacture of a book. The intern will work on a variety of projects for which he or she will proofread texts, organize visual materials, create spreadsheets, and help with other tasks as assigned. Upcoming publications include From Assyria to Iberia: Crossing Continents at the Dawn of the Classical Age, Pieter Coecke van Aelst: Master Artist of Renaissance Antwerp, Madame Cézanne, and The Leonard Lauder Collection of Cubist Art.
Egyptian Art
The intern will work closely with a curator to generate electronic shelf lists for departmental use. This process includes cross-checking and refining records in the collections-management system (TMS), using Adobe Creative Suite to create the shelf lists, and assisting with gallery inventory. The intern will also continue an ongoing project to scan the department’s accession cards, and assist with other projects as needed.
Islamic Art
The intern will digitize the archive of the late curator and archaeologist Charles K. Wilkinson, which includes documents and data related to the architectural decoration of the Seljuq period in Iran. The intern will help to identify artifacts by comparing the archival information and photographs of the stucco fragments with digital photographs. The intern will digitize the tracing of the Nishapur wall painting of a horseman by scanning the originals and using Adobe Illustrator. A sensibility for, if not previous knowledge of, technical archaeological drawings is required.
Medieval Art
The intern will assist with Museum collections-management system (TMS) data entry in support of the review and maintenance of the online collections database, as well as other administrative and curatorial projects as needed. Specialized knowledge of medieval art and familiarity with database programs and Adobe Photoshop preferred.
Modern and Contemporary Art
The intern will work with curatorial and departmental staff archiving material from the Met’s recent exhibition Stieglitz and His Artists: Matisse to O’Keeffe. Responsibilities will include integrating and partially digitizing over twenty years of compiled research into departmental object files. Knowledge of early twentieth-century American art and the Stieglitz circle preferred. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills required.
Photograph Studio
The intern will help digitize the Photograph Studio’s collection of large-format black-and-white negatives. The intern will be trained in imaging standards, calibration techniques, digital and analog archival practices, and some digital photograph editing. The intern will learn about additional departmental activities and processes such as copy-stand photography, clipping paths, and time-lapse photography. Knowledge of digital imaging, digital cameras, Adobe Creative Suite, and other products, as well as proficiency with Apple platforms and strong attention to detail and consistency required.
Visitor Services (Market Research)
The intern will work primarily on visitor studies and interview projects related to special temporary exhibitions. Responsibilities will include interviewing visitors in the galleries and/or the exhibitions, entering data regarding the conducted interviews, and quantitative and qualitative data analysis. The intern will gain insight into all stages of visitor research done by the department and how this research benefits various other departments within the institution. Strong attention to detail, familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel in particular), and the ability to approach and interview visitors are required.
