Program Description
Since its inception in 1999, the ARTS Intern program has provided an exciting opportunity for college undergraduates to learn about museum professions in New York City, through internships in museums and cultural institutions. (See host institutions listed below.) The program seeks candidates with demonstrated financial need and encourages applicants from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Museums host interns in meaningful, educational positions in many different departments, ranging from curatorial, education, development, finance, and special events. Interns will have time-bound assignments and individual projects.  In 2009, the program was incorporated into the programs of Studio in a School, and continues to be managed under the guidance of Thomas Cahill.
Program Details
The program runs for 9 weeks.  Interns work a 35-hour week, and receive a total pay of $3,300. In 2014, the program will run from June 5 through August 8.
Interns also attend weekly visits to participating institutions.  ARTS INTERN coordinates programs that highlight the cultural offerings of and challenges facing institutions in New York City.  Past programs have included curatorial tours of exhibitions, panel discussions, programming workshops, and presentations by speakers in various museum departments and careers.
These museum visits include unique, behind-the-scenes looks at museum  operations, presentations by senior staff and curators, and panels featuring young museum professionals.  Following these visits, assignments are posted on our blog.  All interns must respond to these postings and participate in the on-line discussion about museum visits, presentations, and exhibitions.
In addition to blog postings, interns must complete a report midway through the program and a final report. Weekly time-sheets must be completed on a timely basis.  All of these items are required, including  the weekly blog entries, in order for interns to be paid the full stipend.
Therefore, this internship includes work that may need to be completed beyond the usual workplace hours.  Students who are not prepared for this workload should not apply to the ARTS Intern program.
