Remote Learning for Fall Semester

On behalf of the Design faculty and staff we want to extend a sincere thank you to students for the patience, generosity, and commitment to learning that you overwhelmingly demonstrated last Spring semester. The unplanned move to remote learning was difficult, and was only possible only through the combined efforts of students and teachers. Thank you also to those students who have reached out to communicate their hopes and concerns for the Fall semester in relation to uncertainty caused by COVID-19.
The Design faculty is currently planning the fall semester with two primary goals:

  1. Provide students with rigorous courses that prepare you for professional careers in the field of design.
  2. Make sure that no student, teacher, or staff member puts their health or their family’s health at risk to exposure to COVID-19 for the sake of participating in classes or completing their assignments.

We have decided that the best way to achieve these goals in the Fall is to conduct all Design courses remotely for the entirety of the semester. As campus resources such as the print lab and computer labs reopen, updates will be posted to this blog. However, teachers will not be assigning work that requires you to use these facilities.
To participate in your Design classes at the start of the semester, please check that you have the following pre-requisites completed before August 25, 2020.

  • A current and functioning CUNY CAMS account and a computer with a built-in microphone/camera and the Adobe Creative Cloud installed*.
  • Check both your personal email and QC email accounts for Instructions on how to access your class websites, video conferencing information, and other important course detail. In most cases, this is your QC email address, unless you provided a personal email address to be linked to your CAMS account.

We hope you have a safe, healthy, and happy rest of summer and look forward to (virtually) seeing and working with you in the fall.
*ARTS173 does not require a computer or Adobe Creative Cloud, but does require access to a smart phone.

The Ziff Media Group Fellows Program is searching for energetic and motivated individuals looking to develop their career in digital media.  If you’re looking for an opportunity to geek out on tech, internet culture and e-commerce, in a fast-paced, data-driven, results-oriented environment, ZMG is the place for you.

Fellowships have an initial term of three months which can be extended for up to a total of 12 months. All fellowship roles are paid and eligible for our healthcare benefits.
As the Fellows Program is aimed at cultivating the next generation of digital media leaders, the culmination of the Fellows program may lead to future employment at ZMG. In the past, select high-performing Fellows have become full time employees at the end or shortly after their fellowship was completed.
Overview:

Mashable and Ziff Media Group are seeking a talented and self-starting Design and Illustration Fellow to help make our brands’ visuals more diverse, creative, and distinctive.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in graphic design, logo design, photo editing, and illustration. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable juggling multiple projects and has a passion for creating visually striking work on multiple platforms in the digital space, ranging from onsite editorial to distributed promotional materials and shareable social media.
As a fellow, the imagery you create will be used across multiple online publications in the ZMG portfolio, with an emphasis on Mashable and PCMag. Our major coverage areas include technology, entertainment, internet culture, and social good.
The Design and Illustration Fellow is part of the ZMG Art Team and reports to Staff Illustrators and the Art Director.
Responsibilities:

  • Your main responsibilities will revolve around daily editorial graphic creation: creating photo collages/composites, downloading and editing stock imagery, designing logos for editorial series and enterprise projects, and designing charts and infographics to be used in stories.
  • A large portion of your time will involve working with writers and editors to create bold, eye-catching lead art that both reflects and enhances the tenor of our articles both onsite and across ZMG’s social platforms. You may have to find a way to illustrate abstract concepts or sensitive topics.
  • Organizational skills are a must: You will be expected to manage your time effectively. This is a deadline-driven environment, and that goes for all images and art assets..

Qualifications:

  • A portfolio that showcases various skills and a distinct visual or illustrative style
  • Proficiency in the Adobe Suite, especially Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Comfort with tight deadlines and staggered assignments
  • Creativity and willingness to work with teammates to solve visual problems
  • A desire to learn and grow –– just as we hope to learn from you as well!
  • A positive, can-do attitude

The One Club’s free global portfolio review

The positive response to The One Club Online Portfolio Review has been absolutely phenomenal, with nearly a thousand young creatives from around the world already registered to have their work critiqued. Couple this with several hundred creative professionals already volunteering to critique portfolios and offer advice, and the Online Portfolio Review is shaping up to be an incredible initiative in a time when the global pandemic has put so many young creatives’ aspirations on hold.

Paid Internships Through CUNY Service Corps

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The CUNY Service Corps is a strong University pipeline for diverse talent into New York City’s public sector, having provided thousands of CUNY students with paid work experiences in community-based organizations and government agencies since the program’s launch in 2013.  The Service Corps mobilizes students to work on projects that improve the civic, economic, and environmental sustainability of New York City.

Only students who will be enrolled in Hostos Community College, John Jay College, LaGuardia Community College, New York City College of Technology, and Queens College in the fall of 2020 will be able to participate in the CUNY Service Corps Program.
To be eligible for the CUNY Service Corps, you must:

  • Be working toward a degree at one of the 5 participating CUNY colleges (Hostos Community College, John Jay College, LaGuardia Community College, NY College of Technology, Queens College)
  • Be enrolled full-time (at least 12 credits for undergraduate and 9 credits for graduate students) in spring 2020 and plan to enroll full-time during the 2020-2021 academic year
  • Have a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 2.5*
  • Have earned at least 24 college credits by the end of summer 2020 (12 college credits for community college students)*
  • Have addressed any remedial education needs prior to beginning fall 2020 classes
  • Have the proper work authorization required by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
  • The Service Corps is a one-year commitment and opportunity for CUNY students. Past or current Service Corps members may not reapply.

*NOTE: Community college students with under 24 credits must have a GPA of at least 3.0. Community college students with 24 credits or above can have a 2.5 GPA.
 In addition, the CUNY Service Corps is interested in applicants who demonstrate that they:

  • Want to be part of a special and important program that will make a difference in the lives of New Yorkers

A SYMPOSIUM ORGANIZED BY THE ROCKWELL CENTER FOR AMERICAN VISUAL STUDIES AND THE HUNTER COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF ART AND ART HISTORY

The Symposium will be held online
Friday, March 27, 2020
9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Organized by the Rockwell Center for American Visual Studies at the Norman Rockwell Museum, Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and the Department of Art and Art History at Hunter College, New York City, this one-day interdisciplinary online symposium brings together scholars, curators, and artists who are exploring new approaches to the study of illustration within historical and contemporary frameworks.
As a set of practices and a cultural force, illustration emerged in the 19th century as a new and distinctly modern phenomenon. A vital component of the visual languages of advertising, design, publishing, and entertainment, illustration is omnipresent in modern culture, yet its historical and theoretical specifics have remained relatively unexamined. This symposium aims to bring together researchers and practitioners across multiple fields who are interested in the history, practice, and subjects of illustration, and who want to contribute to the emerging field of illustration studies.
The theme of the symposium’s morning panel on immigration and migration in illustrating is inspired by the Norman Rockwell Museum’s current exhibition, Finding Home: Four Artists’ Stories.
