About MakeSTEAMQ

MakeSTEAMQ is a National Science Foundation-funded project aimed at revolutionizing student learning outcomes. By integrating making and design-thinking into the core curriculum, MakeSTEAMQ empowers students to think creatively and critically. Faculty Fellows within the program are dedicated to developing assignments that promote open experimentation and innovation, placing a strong emphasis on student-led classrooms.

Sustainable By Design

This course provides an introduction to the core concepts underpinning sustainability and their intersections with design.  Students will gain an understanding of the Corporate Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) landscape that has emerged as a driving force in the adoption of sustainability goals and the important role design will play in manifesting the transition to a more sustainable world.  Ultimately, these concepts will be applied to student-defined projects as an extension of their studies in the areas of Data Visualization & Narrative, Product Design, and Marketing & Branding.

Character Animation

Looking to improve your character animation skills and learn traditional “acting with a pencil”? In this class you’ll take the animation principles you learned in your Intro To Digital Animation class and push them further to start delivering animated performances. This class is perfect for anyone who wants to expand their animation skills, might want to pursue a career in the animation industry or simply wants to express themselves through the powerful medium of animation.

Risograph Printing

In this course, students will learn about the colorful and vibrant world of Risograph printing and how it compares to other printing methods used in the Graphic Design industry. Justworks is seeking a Product Design Intern to join our passionate and growing product design team for Summer 2024. As a design intern you will have the opportunity to work with a cross-functional team alongside fellow Product Designers as well as Product Managers, Engineers and Product Marketers to gain imperative knowledge and grow your skill set. You will have the opportunity to contribute to projects and work on all points of the design process from discovery to prototyping to launching designs for Justworks users.

The base wage range for this position based in our New York City Office is targeted at $33.65 to $33.65 per hour.

Summer Design Internship / Hyperakt

Hyperakt is looking for a design intern to support our creative team.

Design Intern
35 hours/week
Location: NYC or Remote USA, Eastern Time Zone

This role supports the design team and reports to the Director of Creative Operations. Hyperakt is looking for a summer design intern to support our design team with branding and digital projects. The design intern will be expected to:

  • Support the team: take on production tasks such as masking and retouching, design assets from existing guidelines, source photography and illustration, conduct research on printing and digital production, document Hyperakt’s past projects, package Adobe files, and create Google templates
  • Collaborate creatively: collaborate directly with designers and CDs to develop brand guidelines, create mockups, build figma prototypes, design wireframes, and brainstorm creative directions
  • Participate in client projects: participate in strategy and design workshops and presentations with clients and assist with synthesizing the output of design exercises
  • Support Hyperakt’s social media: prepare images for Hyperakt’s instagram account

Internship (QC Alumni Relations Department) – April 3rd – June 23rd

  • At least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in their current degree program. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required (especially Word and Excel); Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Canva; Proficiency in Windows Movie Maker or Adobe Premiere Pro. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Willingness to contribute and collaborate as member of a team. 

Work Responsibilities 

  • Collect content and utilize Mailchimp email platform to create April 16th, May 21st and June18th GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) newsletters. 
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of Alumni Relations in managing social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Discord and Link tree platforms. 

Must attend two (2) GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) networking events on April 20th (Astoria/LIC area) and June 8th (Flushing area). Assist with set-up and registration from 5:30-7:30 PM.

Washington Post Product Design Summer 2022 Internship (Remote-Friendly)

Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a Product Design Intern to join its Product Design team for Summer 2022. This team of product designers and researchers leads design strategy, UX, and visual approaches for The Post’s suite of digital products, including washingtonpost.com, our native iOS and Android apps, email, internal publishing tools, and subscription experiences.

In this internship, you’ll have the opportunity to focus on the UX/UI Design, Visual Design, UX Research, and UX Content. Your work will span across our web and mobile web experiences. The ideal candidate will have passion for identifying users’ pain points and have experience with designing through all phases of the product design process. The role will include day-to-day collaboration with newsroom editors, engineers, product managers, and other types of designers.

You’ll be part of a growing team of more than twenty-five designers. You’ll collaborate with product managers and internal stakeholders across multiple teams to identify, ideate on and propose new approaches to our user experience to help redefine how The Washington Post digital experience is consumed by our millions of users.

Responsibilities

  • Design and present mockups, wireframes, sitemaps, user flows, and prototypes that adhere to user-centered design principles to produce high-quality visuals, from concept to execution
  • Work on the entire lifecycle of the product: research, user flows, prototyping, high fidelity comps, and collaboration with engineers on implementation
  • Work with other designers to iterate on style guides, standards, and design systems
  • Partner with engineering, newsroom, and product leadership to ideate and create new features and capabilities
  • Take advantage of building relationships with senior and principal designers. Seek out mentorship from other designers and design leadership.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in our products and process by leveraging your design experiences, best practices and user insights to recommend solutions

Qualifications

  • Rising junior or senior
  • Strong interest in Product Design
  • Optional – Working towards a bachelor’s degree or higher that will be obtained between December 2022 and August 2024 in Design, Graphic Design, Communication Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science or in a design-related field, closely related discipline or similar curriculum such as Psychology, Cognitive Science, Human Factors, Information Systems, etc.
  • A portfolio that shows a strong body of work including outstanding visual and user interface designs. For content or research, a portfolio that represents the equivalent. Acceptable formats include PDF, Powerpoint, website, etc.
  • Interest in research techniques including user/stakeholder interviews, persona creation, journey mapping, and usability testing
  • A collaborative spirit and a proven ability to work well with others, building strong partnerships across teams
  • Understanding of designing for web, mobile, and native applications

Bonus Qualifications

  • Comfort with design and prototyping software like Figma, Zeplin, Sketch, the Adobe Creative Suite, Invision, and ProtoPie (or willingness to learn this software over the summer).
  • Experience designing for digital platforms, interactive applications and website experiences
  • Knowledge of front-end development and best practices for design implementation
  • Strong interest in digital media and news

The internship is paid and will span 90 days from May to August 2022. Start/end dates are flexible.
