The Design Faculty is pleased to start the Fall 2025 semester with the announcement of an impressive accomplishment by one of our talented alumni who graduated just last year. We want to wish Madjanah Walters well as she leaves NYC to pursue her master’s degree through a prestigious U.S. Fulbright Program this month. Professor Amy Fortunato interviewed Madjanah so she could share a little about her experience with the QC Design community.

Amy: What were the main factors that inspired you to apply to the Fulbright Program to study abroad?
Madjanah: To me, Fulbright is a chance to explore a fascination I missed out on. I had already been thinking about it a year prior, and let the deadline past me by. CUNY also offered another study abroad for my final semester, but it was too expensive for such a short window. Flash forward to graduation, I don’t have any major commitments, and the luxury to design my life as I see fit after working my entire college career. I was driven to Fulbright to push myself to explore my ignorances and teach myself how to live just for me. Also, I wanted to understand another culture deeply, to learn Mandarin and develop myself creatively. Traveling to Taiwan had been on my list of places to explore for a longer term too, so it really melted together.
Amy: Did you know anyone who has taken a similar path?
Madjanah: In terms of a study abroad, I have one friend who did a program in Japan and another friend who did one in Cuba, both for a semester. After that, there isn’t anyone in my group or immediate family that have done anything as intensive as a Fulbright.
Amy: What are you most looking forward to as you prepare for this next chapter?
Madjanah: A proper train system. I’m only half kidding. Honestly, all the people I’ll be able to meet and get to know. Also, the experience and growth that comes with being in brand new city alone. It’s exciting all around. In a specifically living in Taiwan lens there’s this vegetarian/ vegan Map with restaurant recommendations in each region, and I will be on that the second I land. Amy: Were there any experiences at Queens College that left a lasting impression on you?
Madjanah: My last semester was, a little, chaotic, but working on my capstone really blew me away. Looking back at it, I’m able to see the accumulation of everything I was taught coming together and the people that brought me that knowledge. Your class really opened my eyes to this curiosity for books that never really had before. You could call that whole class an experience, and that still affects my day-to-day ( I had a 10 minute conversation last weekend on lokta paper, perfect binding and art direction in the publishing world). My acting classes with Claudia showed me that I can actually direct people and make things happen when I need it to make a vision come to life. All the seeds that were planted in my mind and led to powerful moments.
Amy: What advice would you give to a Queens College student who is also interested in pursuing a master’s degree abroad or applying to the Fulbright Program?
Madjanah: Give yourself time, and think about the power of your life/your story. This is a game of delayed gratification from the research phase all the way up to submission in October. The longer you give yourself to really flesh out your motivations, the better chance you have. Because these kinds of programs are open to people across the nation, and (I’m assuming) what they want to hear is why YOU deserved to be the person they pick to teach English as ETA or get a masters or career boost in your desired country. Diving into the history of your chosen country is also something I recommend; what about the country excites you or what are some challenges you could run into? In terms of applying for a Master’s: thinking about what your thesis could be is really helpful. The biggest piece of advice I could give is, lean on your community. Hit up the QC writing tutors, ask a few people to read it over, reach out to alumni from your desired country, and join the Fulbright applicant Slack; there is a world of people willing to help you for free just because they recognize your ambition.
