Team One (Virtual) 2023 / April 12 – 19, 2023

Calling all Black advertising students and recent graduates! For the third exciting year in a row, The One Club for Creativity’s Inclusion & Diversity department has partnered with Team One to host a weeklong virtual Creative Boot Camp.

Taking place on April 12–19, this intense eight-day workshop groups participants into teams to take on the challenge of solving and presenting real creative briefs. But don’t worry, you and your teammates won’t be alone — you’ll be mentored by some fantastic industry professionals all the way to the finish line, where the winning group will receive an internship at Team One!

While the content of this Creative Boot Camp will be of particular relevance to Black creatives, applications are open to all US-based students and recent grads looking to break into the industry. 

The deadline to apply for this year’s Team One Virtual Creative Boot Camp is Monday, March 27. Apply today or spread the word to those you’d know would benefit from this challenge!

2022-23 Queens Tech + Innovation Challenge

In partnership with the Office of the Queens Borough President and support from Google, Resorts World NYC and Flushing Savings Bank we have $100,000 to award in 2023!

Five winners will be chosen to win $20,000 in each of these categories:

  • Urban Tech –  Improve the urban quality of life and lead us into the future!
  • Aviation & Hospitality – As Queens is the center of aviation let’s use technology to strengthen this sector!
  • Big Data & AI  – Using AI in many areas including  but limited to consumer software, enterprise! software, Blockchain, Future of Work, Fintech, Healthcare, Robotics, Machine Learning   
  • Food – An innovative restaurant, food or beverage manufacturer who is/will be located in Queens 
  • Community – An innovative product or service that addresses a geographic or virtual community


The Challenge is open to any Queens resident who is in the starting up stage or has not made over $150,000 in the past year.  Details of the program – date, classes, etc. are on the website: http://queensstartup.org/

Design for America (DFA) 2022 Summer Design Accelerator 

DFA is partnering with Unilever and their brand MELĒ, a science-based skincare product line designed specifically for melanin-rich skin. This 2022 summer opportunity focuses on democratizing the science of skincare and building a trusted community around health and wellness. You can learn more about this opportunity in the invitation deck here.

This opportunity is open to all, Free of charge. No application is needed, just a mix of commitment, interest in growing design thinking capabilities with an amazing cohort of multidisciplinary collaborators, and a curious, daring, open mind! Those interested should submit the invitation form here by June 6.

Call for “We Design” Student Essay Proposals

Calling all students and recent grads! Design Museum Everywhere is now accepting proposals for their upcoming book that will explore personal identity through a deep dive into the worlds of women and gender-expansive designers, Black designers, Indigenous designers and designers of color. Selected essayists will receive an honorarium of $600 for their work. Learn more and submit your pitch.

SPD Student Members get their first 3 entries FREE! (Though student members can enter more than that…if you do, any additional entries will cost $10 each.) Please note: Even though they’re free, you must register your 3 free member entries HERE.

Otherwise, each entry is $10.

PRIZES
The first, second, and third place winners and runners-up in Design, Photography, and Illustration will be featured online at spd.org. Second and third place winners will also receive a 20-minute portfolio review with a board member.

“Let’s Face It” – a nationwide mask design competition – Now Open!

Artists, designers, and creatives of all types have been passionately responding to the current need to cover our faces. MCD is launching Let’s Face It, a nationwide craft and design mask-making competition and community gallery. From the practical to the avant-garde, we are curious to see what you are creating share it with the world.
The deadline to enter is May 31, 2020.
Juried by Marcel Wilson, the Founder and Design Director of Bionic, and JoAnn Edwards, the Museum of Craft and Design’s Co-founder and Executive Director, the winning design will receive $500, the runner-up will receive $250 and third place will receive $100. Additional non-monetary awards will be given for Best in ShowBest Student Design, and Most Unique Design.
Participation is free. All entries will be displayed on the Museum of Craft and Design’s website in a community gallery beginning Friday, June 12, 2020. Additionally, for each design entered, the Museum of Craft and Design will donate a new mask to the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank.

Utopia Parkway Journal 2020 – Open for Submissions!

Utopia Parkway Journal is the Undergraduate Literary Journal of Queens College and is currently open for submissions of visual art for its 2020 edition. Utopia Parkway is also in need of a visual art piece for its front cover.
I’m reaching out to ask if you could send a mass email to notify art majors and minors of this opportunity to contribute to the QC literary and artistic community by submitting their artwork (and literary work!) to Utopia Parkway for consideration to be published.

Queens College Data Hackathon


Tech Incubator at Queens College and Serval Ventures will host a Data Hackathon at Queens College on March 1, during the NYC Open Data week. We invite data scientists, artists, designers, developers and anyone who is interested in data visualization to participate.

Climate Change Poster Contest

The SEES (School of Earth & Environmental Sciences) Club is looking for artists interested in creating graphic, eye-catching posters to be displayed at our week-long Climate Change Week event. Posters will be printed (40” x 55”) and displayed across the quad. Seeking designs that will inspire thought about how climate change is affecting all of us and evoke a sense of need for change.
