Paid Internships Through CUNY Service Corps

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The CUNY Service Corps is a strong University pipeline for diverse talent into New York City’s public sector, having provided thousands of CUNY students with paid work experiences in community-based organizations and government agencies since the program’s launch in 2013.  The Service Corps mobilizes students to work on projects that improve the civic, economic, and environmental sustainability of New York City.
Student Application
The application for the 2020-2021 academic year is now open. Click here to apply today!  The deadline to apply is April 19th, 2020.

Only students who will be enrolled in Hostos Community College, John Jay College, LaGuardia Community College, New York City College of Technology, and Queens College in the fall of 2020 will be able to participate in the CUNY Service Corps Program.
To be eligible for the CUNY Service Corps, you must:

  • Be working toward a degree at one of the 5 participating CUNY colleges (Hostos Community College, John Jay College, LaGuardia Community College, NY College of Technology, Queens College)
  • Be enrolled full-time (at least 12 credits for undergraduate and 9 credits for graduate students) in spring 2020 and plan to enroll full-time during the 2020-2021 academic year
  • Have a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 2.5*
  • Have earned at least 24 college credits by the end of summer 2020 (12 college credits for community college students)*
  • Have addressed any remedial education needs prior to beginning fall 2020 classes
  • Have the proper work authorization required by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
  • The Service Corps is a one-year commitment and opportunity for CUNY students. Past or current Service Corps members may not reapply.

*NOTE: Community college students with under 24 credits must have a GPA of at least 3.0. Community college students with 24 credits or above can have a 2.5 GPA.
 In addition, the CUNY Service Corps is interested in applicants who demonstrate that they:

  • Want to be part of a special and important program that will make a difference in the lives of New Yorkers
  • Are interested in helping people, neighborhoods, and/or organizations
  • Can balance work in the CUNY Service Corps with college studies and other co-curricular commitments
  • Show promise as a leader and a problem-solver
  • Are able to work as a member of a team

A SYMPOSIUM ORGANIZED BY THE ROCKWELL CENTER FOR AMERICAN VISUAL STUDIES AND THE HUNTER COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF ART AND ART HISTORY

The Symposium will be held online
Friday, March 27, 2020
9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Organized by the Rockwell Center for American Visual Studies at the Norman Rockwell Museum, Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and the Department of Art and Art History at Hunter College, New York City, this one-day interdisciplinary online symposium brings together scholars, curators, and artists who are exploring new approaches to the study of illustration within historical and contemporary frameworks.
As a set of practices and a cultural force, illustration emerged in the 19th century as a new and distinctly modern phenomenon. A vital component of the visual languages of advertising, design, publishing, and entertainment, illustration is omnipresent in modern culture, yet its historical and theoretical specifics have remained relatively unexamined. This symposium aims to bring together researchers and practitioners across multiple fields who are interested in the history, practice, and subjects of illustration, and who want to contribute to the emerging field of illustration studies.
The theme of the symposium’s morning panel on immigration and migration in illustrating is inspired by the Norman Rockwell Museum’s current exhibition, Finding Home: Four Artists’ Stories.

Paid Summer Internship at the Center for Urban Pedagogy

The Center for Urban Pedagogy is hiring an intern for the summer of 2020!
As a CUP intern, you’ll assist with several projects and learn about CUP’s methods for using design to meet community needs.
We’re looking for an intern to assist with:
+Research and general support with CUP’s Community Education and Youth Education programs, like Making Policy Public and Urban Investigations
+Administrative work, like communications, database, and website upkeep (prior web experience not required!)
This is an entry-level position intended for those who haven’t had access to many internships or opportunities to work in an office or nonprofit environment. We’re looking for someone with a passion for social justice, great attention to detail, and strong verbal and written communication skills. While research is a part of this position, it’s more of a general support role.
Dates for the internship are flexible, but we’re looking for someone who can work in the office for a minimum of 3, 8-hour days a week, for 10-weeks. Please include your availability in your cover letter.
The internship pays $17 per hour, or you can choose to receive school credit if your school offers it.

Paid Full-time Job Opening: CUP Change In Design Fellowship

The Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP) is announcing the call for the 2020 CUP Fellowship for Change in Design! Learn more on the Application Page.
The CUP Fellowship for Change in Design is a paid, year-long, full-time, training program designed to promote and support individuals in gaining the skills, contacts, and experience to help them excel in their design careers. The Fellowship is an initiative to support the development of a pipeline of talented individuals from historically under-represented communities into the design fields, and to dismantle the systemic biases that stand in the way of their advancement as leaders in these fields. The 2020 Fellow will be selected through a competitive, juried process and will work with CUP from July 2020–June 2021.
Applications should include:
– A cover letter addressing why you are interested in the Fellowship, what you hope to get out of it, and what your goals are for your career
– A current resume
– A portfolio of your design work. We are looking for your skills to work on a range of visuals and with type. Please describe the context that your projects were completed in and your role.
– A list of 3 references, with contact information

BuzzFeed Product Design Summer Internships

We’re hiring two interns this summer!

Deciding what kind of internship you want is hard. Large companies give you a glimpse of how Product Design is practiced at scale. Startups are more hands-on, providing opportunities to have a more direct impact with your work.

  • Working with a dedicated design mentor throughout the program
  • Presenting work and receiving feedback via weekly critique sessions
  • Brainstorming solutions with other designers
  • Collaborating across Product, Engineering, Data Science and other teams

At BuzzFeed, we work on a lot of problems at scale but also know how to have fun. Free lunch twice a week, leftovers from the Tasty kitchen, and other exciting intern events are just some of the things you can expect!

The Hiring Process

1. Application Review

We will be reviewing applications as we receive them. We’ll be evaluating you based on similar criteria we look for in Associate Product Designers. Once we’ve shortlisted potential candidates, we’ll reach out with interview requests. For this internship, we’re only considering Product Designers because the role requires having demonstrated User Interface and User Experience work for digital products.

2. Teamwork & Collaboration Interview

Our initial conversation will last about 45 minutes and will focus on getting to know you, seeing how you collaborate and work with others, and understanding your skillset. We’ll ask you about your experience collaborating with other disciplines, like engineers, data scientists, and product managers. If you haven’t worked with these disciplines before, tell us about how you’ve worked in a team.

We’ll also tell you about the product design team, and what it’s like to be on a team at BuzzFeed. This conversation will happen with a BuzzFeed product designer over video chat.

3. Portfolio Review

For those who are successful in their first interview, you’ll have another 45-minute conversation with a member of the product design team over video chat. We’ll ask you to walk us through 2–3 projects that you’ve worked on in the past.

We want to see not only the final product but also the messy parts of the process. What did you try that didn’t work? What variations did you come up with before narrowing down it to the final design? What parts of the work generated friction or disagreement with your team or other stakeholders? Did you run experiments? If so, what did you learn?

These projects can be from school, past internships, or self-initiated. Don’t worry if you didn’t have teammates or stakeholders on your projects, that’s ok, we’re most interested in understanding your design and communication skills.

4. Finalizing candidates

Following these interviews, we will regroup to compare notes and finalize the most well-suited candidates. Once we find a good fit, we’ll send out offers!

Whether you get an offer or not, you’ll hear back from us to let you know we’ve reached the end of our process.

Summer 2020 Internships at Gallagher and Associates

We are looking for enterprising students to join our New York office as part of our media team. Our studio predominantly focuses on digital interfaces and immersive media-driven projects. The backbone of the work that we do consists of exhibition design and museums, having recently opened projects such as the International Spy Museum in Washington D.C. and the Sazerac Cocktail House in New Orleans.

As an intern you are an excited designer, open to learning and creative dialogue with the ability to work collaboratively in a fluid studio environment. The internships will be composed of time working with our multidisciplinary teams in the office in order to get a sense of our overall process. 
Visual Design Intern
Qualified candidates should have:

  • A strong visual background with great sensitivity to typography and robust graphic design skills
  • An understanding of and interest in interaction design
  • Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite programs
  • Motion and animation skills are a plus
  • Working knowledge of Sketch, prototyping tools such as Invision, Framer is a plus

Roles and Responsibilities include:

  • Participating in studio brainstorms and creative conversations
  • Helping to refine and further develop visual concepts with the team 
  • The ability to multi-task in a fast-paced studio environment
  • Being an accountable and contributing member of the studio
  • Pushing personal creative growth and discovery

Motion Design Intern
Qualified candidates should have:

  • Experience working with After Effects and/or Cinema 4d.
  • A strong visual background with great sensitivity to typography and graphic design skills
  • Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite programs
  • Working knowledge of other 3d softwares, Sketch, creative coding, prototyping tools and projection mapping is a plus.
  • Motivation to expand your skills in the intersection of physical and digital.

Roles and Responsibilities include:

  • Participating in studio brainstorms and creative conversations
  • Helping to refine and further develop visual and animation concepts with the team 
  • The ability to multi-task in a fast-paced studio environment
  • Being an accountable and contributing member of the studio
  • Pushing personal creative growth and discovery

You need to be able to work legally in the US:

  • For current international students, you are able to use CPT in order to legally work at Gallagher and Associates.
  • For all others, you should have an approved OPT in order to work at Gallagher and Associates.
