Packaging Design, Spring 2014
We will explore packaging of existing products on the market, analyze the elements of their appeal to their perceived target audience, critique them, and come up with our own re-designed versions to improve on the packaging or change its message. This class would be primarily focused on sustainable packaging design using recycled materials.

Through a series of exercises and experiments, students will learn to develop control over their drawing and writing in the medium of comics. Related to theater and film, comics are an enduring art form, which can be made by anyone for the price of a pencil and the willingness to concentrate.

There’s not a person on Earth who has never played a game. In a world increasingly dominated by technology and digital media, examining the principles that make a game great is key to designing successful interactive experiences on the job. Game design is critical in understanding how we play, and can be applied to the design of websites, mobile applications, social networks, and immersive experiences.

Heads Up-Changes Coming to the Graphic Design Major

headsup
As of September, 2014, there will be changes to the graphic design major. This does not affect current majors, only students who declare a graphic design major after September, 2014. See below.
Undergraduate Programs in Graphic Design
Major (60 credits)
The Art Department of Queens College offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Graphic Design that provides students the creative, intellectual, and technical skills to become effective communicators in the new century. Students learn to shape the form and content of media across a variety of formats—from print to digital. In addition to the core requirements, the program includes courses in animation, digital imaging, digital moviemaking, web design, interaction design, publication design, advertising design, graphic novel and digital illustration. Students graduate equipped with the skills to succeed in careers, graduate school or both.
The Art Department also offers Minors in Graphic Design, Digital Graphics, Animation and illustration, and in Digital Moviemaking and Imagemaking.
Students who wish to major in Graphic Design must meet with an advisor prior to declaring the major. Admission requirements include a minimum overall GPA of 2.75 or approval by portfolio review. Program standards for satisfactory progress require students to maintain a GPA of 2.75 or better within the major and receive no grade lower than C in any requirements for the major. Students accepted into the major are requested to meet with an advisor once each semester to ensure adherence to major requirements. A laptop computer is strongly encouraged for students majoring in graphic design.

UNDERSTANDING GAME DESIGN AND CULTURE (ONLINE CLASS)

The structures used in creating fun and unique gaming experiences — dynamic systems, active participation, playful improvisation — aren’t relegated solely to the realm of the game. They also give us interesting insight into our broader world. Using examples of digital games and some live participation, this class looks at how game design principles can help us understand media, design, and culture.
