Design jobs and internship opportunities.

Paid internship at Scholastic – Starting end of Feb. Apply now!

Hi Everyone,

We have two exciting design internship opportunities beginning this semester in partnership with Scholastic, Inc. Each position will pay $15/hour and will expect 12-hour-per-week commitments for the duration of the semester, starting in late February, with potential for increased hours. The internships are not available for credit as academic internships this semester and will be open to recent graduates as well as current students.

The graphic designer intern position calls for a graphic/visual designer with experience working in video graphics and with knowledge of video art, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and typography. Working knowledge of product design/UX/UI is a plus. Bonus proficiencies (not required, but useful): InVision, Sketch, Zeplin, AEM, Trello. This intern will be working under the direction of Nancy Heiberg, Executive Creative Director of Scholastic Book Clubs.

The video editor intern position calls for someone interested in both video and event production. Some of the tasks include cutting together video in Premiere Pro and animate graphics and closed captions (possibly in After Effects). Graphic design skills are also helpful (eg. InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), as the team’s graphic designer could use assistance. Working knowledge of green screen is a plus. This intern will be working under the direction of Traci Swain, Creative Producer at Scholastic. To give you an idea of the flavor of the work, post copy and videos her team produced for children’s book The Good Egg can be seen at the following links: Book Boys video | Book Talks video | post copy for the Behind the Scenes stream | other Judy Newman at Scholastic blog assets.

Candidates should have flexibility for a combination of in-person and remote work. In-person work would take place at Scholastic’s offices and studios in Manhattan.

If you have a strong interest in the publishing industry then please apply, even if you do not have proficiency in all of the listed programs. These internships will provide hands-on mentorship in a team environment and be great opportunities for someone excited by the prospect of working closely with energetic creatives to help connect books and readers. Scholastic is hoping to use this process to invest in young, passionate designers who will want to join their team beyond the internship experience.

To apply, please send your resume and cover letter as soon as possible to Kristy Caldwell at [email protected] with the subject line “Scholastic internship.” Be sure to start your cover letter by stating which position you’re applying for: design intern or video production intern. If you have a portfolio website then please include that link in your documents. Candidates will also need to be vaccinated since there will be in-person work.

Interviews will likely be conducted over video. We hope to start that process very soon and will be looking through the pool of applicants this week.

Thank you,

Kristy Caldwell
