Portfolio Success: Strategies for Professional Development

A panel discussion on creating effective design portfolios. We will explore the role portfolios play in a successful design career now and in the future and will ask, are traditional portfolios still relevant? If so, what does a successful portfolio look like and what kind of projects should be included?
Panelist will discuss what clients and employers want to see and which abilities industry leaders consider most important? You are invited to join the discussion as we look at new ways of teaching and explore emerging trends in effective portfolio development.

LGBTQ Comics Festival August 18th & 19th

Flame Con, the world’s largest queer comic con, returns for its fourth year. Featuring a two-day comics, arts and entertainment expo, showcasing creators and special guests from all corners of the LGBTQ fandom. It features thoughtful discussions, exclusive performances, screenings, cosplay and more!
Geeks of all types are invited to attend and celebrate the diversity and creativity of queer geekdom and LGBTQ contributions to pop culture.
Flame Con 2017 brought together the queer fan community on an unprecedented scale. Drawing in over 6,000 attendees and nearly 200 creators to the two-day event, Flame Con continued to remain New York City’s largest queer comic con.

Campus Event for Students interested in Graphic Novels and Illustration


The QC French and Francophone club is hosting an event called Making Your Degree a Career, will be held on Wednesday, May 2nd from 12:15-1:15 in Powdermaker Hall: Room 153.  The purpose of the event is to bring together students who study languages, literature and the arts to realize the importance of their degree and the doors that it could open for them.  The main speaker is Nadia Shammas, a Brooklyn College graduate who will talk about how she raised money to fund her career, bringing together artists to form a graphic novel focused on health issues.  Moreover, other speakers will discuss how their internships kickstarted their careers, and how they used their degree to form a career.  Current QC students will talk their internships with Tech Incubator, a group on campus that helps early stage student ventures build successful technology companies. 

2018 Typographics Conference @ Cooper Union (students can attend for free)


Design Students interested in attending this year’s two day 2018 TYPOGRAPHICS conference at Cooper Union on June 15th-16th have the opportunity to volunteer their time working at the conference in exchange for free attendance,

Student Exhibition At Flushing Town Hall


Due to the snow storm, the exhibition reception for the Queens College Art Department Student Work Exhibition at Flushing Town Hall will be rescheduled. This post will be updated as soon as the new date and time is confined.

February 8th: 2018 AIGA Design Job Fair for students and recent grads


Are you a design student or a newly minted graduate? Join us for AIGA/NY’s 2nd annual mini-job fair! Its speed networking meets the design industry not another portfolio review. Come by and introduce yourself. Meet reps. from New York’s top creative organizations, companies, agencies and studios and learn about the advantages of working at their company. Ask what a typical day is like for their designers, find out about all the office perks and hear what their creative directors look for when they hire new talent. Misperceptions: A conversation about women and technology / Rosenthal Library

Misperceptions: A conversation about women and technology, is a discussion with Debera Johnson, founder of Pratt’s Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator (BF+DA), about her path into the field, the current work happening at BF+DA (http://bkaccelerator.com/ ), and the general issues still faced by many women working in tech-based fields.

It is currently scheduled to take place in the Art Center (Rosenthal Library 6th Floor),Monday, December 4, from 1:30-2:30pm.
