This film chronicles the influence of the famous German art school on design and architecture in the United States. After the Bauhaus closed under Nazi pressure in 1933, such émigrés such as Anni and Josef Albers brought the school’s revolutionary concepts and curriculum to American institutions, including Black Mountain College.

This feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture looks at the proliferation of one typeface, Helvetica as it celebrates its 60th birthday. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them. Renowned designers discuss their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type.
Helvetica encompasses the worlds of design, advertising, psychology, and communication, and invites us to take a second look at the thousands of words we see every day, and pushes us to explore larger conversation about the way type affects our lives.

Profiles Milton Glaser (1929- ), America’s foremost graphic designer: designer of the iconic “I [heart] N.Y.” logo, teacher, and humanitarian. Interviews with Glaser are arranged to take him through a rough chronology of his life: study at New York High School of Music and Art and at Cooper Union, a seminal stay in Italy, his marriage, and his various partnerships – founding Push Pin Studios and “New York” magazine, designing Grand Union supermarkets, and working with “The Nation.” Interspersed are examples of his work. Glaser is, throughout, charming in manner, memorable in his observations, and generous of spirit.

The One Club’s Annual Here Are All The Black People is a one-day event that provides a space for multicultural students, recent graduates, and creative professionals to enrich their careers through training and exploring new opportunities. This event is made possible by The One Club for Creativity as well as agency and corporate sponsors and tickets for entry-level job seekers is free.
This is not your average career fair! HAATBP gives attendees interested in exploring and developing their careers in advertising and design access to:

- Mentoring Opportunities
- Student / Participant Portfolio Reviews
- Recruiting Booths
- Networking
- Live Talent Pitch Competition
This year, HAATBP 2017 rolls out a separate track with mid-level focused topics. This new event format not only builds access and exposure for entry-level talent, but also gives professional development opportunities for diverse mid-level creative professionals as well.
The Mid-level professional series is only for working creatives with 5-7 years of working experience and tickets are $40.00 for non-members and $30.00 for members. Tickets include a separate selection of professionally focused sessions and a closed pre-cocktail session for only executives, mid-level professionals and working industry professionals. Mid-level professionals are also invited to opt-in to our mid-level talent pool of stars.
The Talent Pool of Stars is a closed recruiter tool for entry level and working professionals looking to network or advance their careers.

SPD-U Presents: Student Portfolio Reviews – Summer 2017
Queens Memory Project at the Queens Museum
This coming Sunday, April 23, Queens Memory is hosting an afternoon of story-telling and creativity at the Queens Museum. Join us from 2 to 5 pm for hands-on activities exploring the themes of migration and diversity in Queens!
Undergraduate students from the Design program at Queens College have created a collaborative banner that says “I Live Here” in some of the borough’s many spoken and written languages.
Activities at the event include finding your community on our giant puzzle map of Queens, writing a love letter to your neighborhood, and have a free portrait taken! The activities will be led by Bridget Bartolini of the Five Boro Story Project, Fernanda Espinosa of People’s Collective Arts/Colectivo de Arte Popular, and Annabel Short, creator of the 30th Ave: A Year in the Life of a Street blog. The event is free and open to the public.
There will also display archival photos relating to the history of diversity in Queens. This event is the culminating celebration of our NEH-funded “50 Years of Integration” series of community history events.
SMARTPITCH by CUNY Startups – Kickoff & Team Match: March 31st
SMARTPITCH is a pitch competition for students in marketing, business, design and computer science. SMARTPITCH is an opportunity to work as a part of a multi-functional team of four to ideate, run a team, project manage, create a prototype and a pitch. You will use the tools NYC’s tech companies and startups use to communicate and to run projects and will apply cutting-edge methods: design thinking, lean method and Agile team management. You will do competitive research, tech planning, define marketing strategy, create a prototype and a 5-min pitch.
