Expression in Form, Rhythm, & Movement–Free Lecture at Cooper Union
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2015, 6:30PM – 8:30PM
A free, public lecture by John Stevens that looks at the thematic visual elements and relationships of letterforming from a craft and image-making perspective. Although great skill is required for the best calligraphy, one can get lost in the minutiae. Thinking in terms of visual language (not forgetting content) frees us to say what we really want to say or express. RSVP requested.
John Stevens is one of the most gifted and original letter artists on the international scene, renowned for his skill as a calligrapher, letter artist, and designer. Starting as a sign painter in New York, his insatiable inquiry into letters and their design led him into calligraphy and lettering as image, working with various pens, brushes, and later computer. By his mid-twenties, he had many nationally known clients in publishing, packaging, advertising, television, and film.
John’s work has graced book jackets, magazines, newspapers, libraries, museums, and churches. As an in-demand teacher, he has been invited to teach at many national and international letter-arts conferences throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia to teach his art. John’s calligraphic artworks are included in the collections of the San Francisco Public Library; Berlin’s Akademie der Künste; and La Casa del Libro (San Juan, Puerto Rico), as well as in many private collections. People can easily find his works in dozens of books and publications from Asia, Australia, Europe, and the U. S. A. More recently, his book Scribe: Artist of the Written Word was published in 2013 to critical acclaim.
Please RSVP here.

Call for Submissions: Quick, Easy, Fun Cell-phone photo contest at QC
65-30: SPACE/MEMORY calls us to a greater awareness of the spaces that we inhabit during our time at Queens College, and encourages an increased appreciation for the thousands of stories unfolding around us at 65-30 Kissena Boulevard. QC is home to over 20,000 students, faculty and staff from all walks of life, united at some level by our shared experience of the campus. As we go about our daily routines, often so quickly that we forget to take in our surroundings, we can easily lose sight of the fact that our environments are more than just the blurry backdrops to our lives; they are active participants. Our campus places shape the moments that we spend here each week, and their work does not end when we depart for the next stage of our day. Instead, they continue to lend significance to the daily worlds of thousands of others with whom we may never cross paths. In this way, the memories that we form with each passing moment are both unique and shared, wholly ours yet part of a collective memory formed by all who have and will call Queens College theirs.
All members of the campus community are invited to submit photos of spaces on and around Queens College that hold particular significance to them. Content can range from a favorite bench on the quad to a special vantage point of the city skyline to a spot in a local park or eatery–the possibilities are limitless. The only real guideline is that all photos must be taken with a cell phone, now a primary means of memory recording, to allow this special awareness of space to flow with the continuity of everyday experience–turning off the autopilot does not have to cause a major disruption to our daily lives.
Images must be submitted via Instagram to #my6530 or via email to [email protected] no later thanSunday, September 27.
