Changes to the Design Major Fall 2024

Students who declare their major in Design starting from Fall 2024 will follow the curriculum of the Design Fact Sheet that is currently posted (approved 4/26/2024).

The following changes have been made from the previous curriculum:

  • DESN 214 is no longer a required course
  • DESN 222 is now a required course. It was previously listed as DESN 286
  • DESN 193 has a name change from Intro to Digital Animation to Motion Graphics I
  • DESN 290 has a name change from Motion Graphics to Motion Graphics II

Students who declared their major in Design before Fall 2024 will continue to follow the previous curriculum.

  • If you have taken DESN 193 – Intro to Digital Animation, you do not need to retake it as Motion Graphics I
  • If you have taken DESN 290 – Motion Graphics, you do not need to retake it as Motion Graphics II
  • If you have taken DESN 286 – Interaction Design, you do not need to take DESN 222 – Interaction Design.
  • If you have taken DESN 193, DESN 286, or DESN 290 already, taking them again under their new names/codes will count as a repeated course and replace your previous grade and credits for the class.
  • If you have not taken DESN 286 – Interaction Design AND you have taken DESN 214 – Web Design I, you do not need to take DESN 222 – Interaction Design. If you would like to take Interaction Design, it will count towards your Design Electives.

Headway’s Book Lovers Scholarship

Headway proudly offers the Headway’s Book Lovers Scholarship, a unique initiative designed to support students in their pursuit of academic and personal excellence. This scholarship is open to U.S. students enrolled in colleges, universities, or vocational-technical schools and is part of our mission to empower learners through literacy and education.

We’ve also recently updated our scholarship page to include insights from our past winner, who shared their inspiring experience and how the scholarship helped them achieve their goals.

Eligibility criteria for the scholarship include:

  • Citizens of the United States;
  • At least 16 years old;
  • Final-year high school students, secondary school graduates, or current college/university undergraduates;
  • A high school cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher;
  • Demonstrated leadership at school and/or in the community; and
  • Full-time enrollment in an accredited college, university, or vocational-technical school within the United States for the 2025 academic year.

Application Deadline: September 15, 2025, 3 pm CST

Scholarship Amount: $1,500

Application Requirements:

  1. General information about the student;
  2. A current, complete transcript of grades (academic record);
  3. Essay OR Video: the student’s vision for a non-fiction book that has the potential to become a timeless handbook for humanity;
  4. A paragraph about leadership;
  5. A paragraph about goals and motivation;
  6. A letter of recommendation.

School of Arts – Arts Leadership Bootcamp 2025

We are excited to share an exclusive opportunity —the 2025 Arts Leadership Bootcamp, tailor-made for arts students from Queens College, York College, LaGuardia Community College, and Queensborough Community College. This weekend event, happening on our campus from Friday, March 7th to Sunday, March 9th, 2025, offers a unique platform for students to engage in panel discussions, receive 1:1 feedback from industry experts, and participate in workshops on branding, social media, and other critical topics like diversity, equity, and inclusion, financial literacy, hybrid programming, and multi-hyphenate careers.

This is a competitive program funded by the Queens College School of Arts and free of charge for participants. Encourage your students to participate in this transformative experience!

Utopia Parkway Launch Event

Everyone is invited to the launch event of the Spring 2024 issue of Queens College’s undergraduate literary journal, Utopia Parkway. Copies will be available to browse, and student editors and faculty advisors will be on hand to answer questions. This year’s editors include design students Jeremiah Rorie and Rosalyn Garcia. Faculty advisors include Assistant Professor of Design Kristy Caldwell. Read about the editors here.

The Spring 2024 issue includes contributions from design students Janelle Dey, Rosalyn Garcia, Scarlet Hernandez, Jenny Lin, Vivian Luo, Jenny Mao, Habin Moon, Danilo Moy Li, Steven Noh, Jeremiah Rorie, and Maya Speller. Cover art and design by Jeremiah Rorie.

The event will include a slideshow of all visual art from the issue and feature readings from several creative writing contributors.

Graphic Design & Event Intern – QC School of Arts

The QC School of Arts is seeking a Queens College student to join our team as a motivated Graphic Design and Event Intern! The ideal candidate will possess proficiency in graphic design and must be available to work on-site during our upcoming 3-day Arts Leadership Bootcamp from Friday, March 8th, 2024 to Sunday, March 10th, 2024, with flexible hours ranging from 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. To be considered, candidates must submit a resume along with samples of their graphic design work.

This position offers an hourly rate of $17 for a commitment of 5-10 hours per week leading up to the Bootcamp weekend, with the potential for extension into a longer internship with the School of Arts. The intern will report to the Associate Dean of the School of Arts.

NYSCI New York Hall of Science Graphic Design Internship

Position Title:  Graphic Design Intern

DEPARTMENT ROLE 
The Graphic Design Department at NYSCI provides in-house graphic services for all departments and executives at NYSCI and manages the execution of the visual brand identity of the organization in external facing communications in the areas of print, digital design and signage. Design projects range from educational materials, promotional materials, print advertising, signage and video displays. The department plays an advisory role in web and exhibition related projects.  

FUNCTION 
Reporting to the Creative Services Manager this position will allow design students a chance to acquire work-related day-to-day skills in the area of graphic design, print, print production, digital design and signage.  

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES 
• Update flyers and templated documents in Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office applications 
• Fielding request for edits and changes to existing designs and publications 
• Operating in-house ink jet printers 
• Occasional hand production skills, i.e. trim out in-house printed posters  
• Familiarity with museum’s extensive photo archive. 

QUALIFICATIONS 
• Excellent design and typography skills 
• Junior/Senior college student 

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS 
• Proficient in InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop 
• Illustration skills a plus. 
• Attention to detail. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 
• Strong layout skills a plus 
• Fluency in Spanish and/or Chinese a plus. 
• Experience in video editing/animation a plus. 
• Examples of current design/graphics arts work.

Calling all Black advertising students and recent graduates! For the third exciting year in a row, The One Club for Creativity’s Inclusion & Diversity department has partnered with Team One to host a weeklong virtual Creative Boot Camp.

Taking place on April 12–19, this intense eight-day workshop groups participants into teams to take on the challenge of solving and presenting real creative briefs. But don’t worry, you and your teammates won’t be alone — you’ll be mentored by some fantastic industry professionals all the way to the finish line, where the winning group will receive an internship at Team One!

While the content of this Creative Boot Camp will be of particular relevance to Black creatives, applications are open to all US-based students and recent grads looking to break into the industry.
